Founder Wellness for Women: Megan Swan on Building Without Burnout | Blush & Bloom Podcast | Ep. 50

Founder wellness for women, alcohol-free living and building without burnout: Megan Swan on Blush & Bloom Ep. 50.

Megan Swan, Alta Vita co-founder and wellness strategist, on the Blush and Bloom podcast

On this week's Blush & Bloom, Gigi Kenneth sits down with Megan Swan, a wellness coach and strategist for female entrepreneurs and the co-founder of Alta Vita, a medical wellness tourism company she runs with her husband. Megan is also an author, an angel investor, and a retreat host, and the throughline across all of it is a single idea: founder wellness is not a reward you earn after you succeed, it is the strategy that lets you succeed at all.

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • Why wellness is a business strategy, not a nice-to-have
  • Megan's book, "Marinating in Chaos", and what writing it taught her
  • Choosing alcohol-free living, and how alcohol was marketed to women
  • What holistic health means beyond "medicine 2.0"
  • Wellness-aligned fundraising and the funding gap women founders face
  • The story behind Alta Vita and its medical wellness retreats in Mexico

What is founder wellness, and why treat it as a business strategy?

Founder wellness is the practice of protecting your health, energy, and attention so you can lead sustainably instead of running on adrenaline. Megan frames it through the triple bottom line and the athlete's mindset: you never train seven days a week without rest, because recovery is when the body rebuilds. As she puts it, "You are your most valuable asset. So if you're not intentionally taking care of you, mind, body, soul, something's gonna give over time."

Hustle culture, she argues, works until it doesn't. You might get five or ten years out of it, but eventually it charges you, in your mental health, your physical health, or your relationships. The more durable path is slower and more deliberate: "The most successful businesses and projects and movements come from a slow, intentional, sustainable action."

What does holistic health actually mean?

Megan draws a clear line between health and wellness: "Health is like you're not sick. Wellness is like you're optimized beyond health." Holistic health, in her practice at Alta Vita, means looking at the whole person, mind, body, and even spirit, rather than treating symptoms in isolation. She contrasts the current "medicine 2.0" system, where specialists stay in their lane and reach for a painkiller, with a whole-body approach that asks where the pain actually comes from.

Why alcohol-free living

Now around seven and a half years alcohol-free, Megan describes her path as a "spontaneous sobriety" story. She walks through how alcohol was marketed to a generation of women as empowerment, and why that framing deserves a second look, noting that "no amount of alcohol is good for you." She is careful to say it does not have to be all or nothing for everyone, but greater awareness around alcohol is, in her words, a key aspect of holistic wellness.

Money, funding, and building on your own terms

The conversation turns to wellness-aligned fundraising and the stark funding gap women founders face. Megan is part of networks channeling capital to women, including The Firehood, The 51, and Bad Bitch Empire, and she reframes the startup dream itself. Instead of chasing the unicorn, she backs sustainable, profitable companies: "We want camels. We don't want unicorns." She and Gigi also get into building Alta Vita with a partner, combining her holistic lens with her husband's surgical background, and running medical wellness retreats in Chiapas, Mexico.
